Investing is a fundamental strategy for growing your wealth as you plan for the future. By adopting a thoughtful approach, you can aim to make your money work harder and more efficiently for you.
How to use our investment calculator
We've built our investment calculator to be as easy to use as possible, to help you create an illustration of your possible future investment value. Here's what to enter into the tool:
- Starting balance: the current value of your investment.
- Annual rate: the annual rate of interest you're earning.
- Time period: the number of years and months you plan to invest for.
- Compound frequency: how often interest on your investment is compounded.
- Regular contributions: any additional deposits or withdrawals you are making to/from your investment (optional).
Once you've clicked the 'calculate' button, the calculator will return a future value estimate based upon the values you provided. If you're unsure of how often interest is compounded on your investment, you can check with your bank or financial institution.
Now we've dealt with how to use the calculator tool, let's take a look at some of the different types of investment available to you. We'll also link out to some relevant and useful resources to help you.
Different types of investments
When exploring options for growing your money, you'll come across a variety of shorter term and longer term options, with varying degrees of risk and reward. We'll take a look at some of these for both the U.S. and U.K. now. Whilst reading this section, remember that the suitability of the options mentioned will depend on individual circumstances. So, consider your own goals and seek professional advice where needed.
U.S. Investments
In the U.S., people commonly invest in stocks, bonds, mutual funds and ETFs (Exchange-Traded Funds). Retirement accounts like 401(k)s and IRAs are also widely considered for their tax benefits.
For those looking to get into property, without directly getting involved in buying and managing it themselves, REITs (Real Estate Investment Trusts) can be a practical option. And then there's the higher-risk options, such as cryptocurrencies (Bitcoin, etc) and peer-to-peer lending platforms.
As always, it's worth considering what your financial goals are and what level of risk you're comfortable with. Remember, you don’t have to invest all your money in one place. Diversifying into multiple different investments may help you reduce your risk exposure and better protect your money.
For further reading, SmartAsset has a very good article discussing these options, together with their advantages and disadvantages.
U.K. Investments
In the U.K., the first port of call for most investors is the ISA (Individual Savings Account) because of its tax-free wrapper. You can choose to put money into a cash ISA, a stocks and shares ISA, or a mix of both, up to a set limit each year.
For pensions, there are workplace schemes or personal pensions like SIPPs (Self-Invested Personal Pensions), which can help you invest money for retirement.
In addition to these, bonds, property and unit trusts are other popular choices. And then there are mutual funds or ETFs. And, as with the US, there are riskier investments such as cryptocurrencies and peer-to-peer lending platforms.
For further reading on all these, see Investopedia's guide to U.K. investments.
A word about risk
We've mentioned risk a couple of times. All investments come with some level of risk, so it's important your investment choices and goals match the risk you're willing to take. It’s about balancing potential growth with the chance of loss. The more you learn, understand and stay informed, the better you'll be at managing your risk exposure and adjusting your strategy when you need to.
Diversification is key with investing - learn about it and use it to lower your exposure and overall risk levels. You can find out more about diversification in this Motley Fool article.
Seeking professional advice
If you're thinking about looking for some advice tailored to your personal situation, you may find it helpful to speak with an independent financial advisor. They can help you create investment strategies that fit your personal circumstances, risk tolerance, and financial goals. Your advisor can then regularly review and adjust your strategies with you as your life circumstances change, the markets shift or your goals evolve.
To find a trusted advisor, you might wish to explore resources like the Financial Planning Association (U.S.) or Unbiased (U.K.).
